ABB to power South Korea’s first domestic zero-emissions ferry

    ABB has secured a contract with Haemin Heavy Industries shipyard to provide a complete power and propulsion solution for Busan Port Authority’s first all-electric passenger ferry The new ferry represents the first commitment by South Korean authorities to a plan which will see 140 state-owned conventionally powered vessels replaced with those operating on cleaner alternatives by 2030, in line with environmental legislation. Sustainable transportation, including marine vessels, will play an important role in South Korea’s plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, set out in the country’s Green New Deal, announced in 2020. As the first system integrator chosen to support this initiative, ABB will deliver an end-to-end electric power and propulsion solution for the twin-hulled ferry, which is due for delivery in 2022. Norsepower installs first tiltable Rotor Sails on Sea-Cargo Ro-Ro

This installation heralds the world’s first tiltable Rotor Sail, showcasing that vessels that have to negotiate height restricted routes can benefit from this fuel and emissions-saving solution. According the analysis conducted by Norsepower and SEA-CARGO, the installation - on board the SC Connector, a 12,251 gross tonne (GT) sidedoor Ro-Ro – can achieve a fuel consumption, fuel cost and carbon emissions reduction of up to 25%. Princess Cruises Announces Pacific Princess to Leave the Fleet

The sale of the cruise ship is in line with parent company   Carnival Corporation's   plan to accelerate the removal of less efficient ships from its fleet. Pacific Princess first joined the cruise line's fleet in 2002, and originally entered service in 1999 as R3 for   Renaissance Cruises. The boutique-style ship offered an intimate cruising environment, with a total of just 670 passengers, but incorporated many of the dining and entertainment options available on the cruise line's larger cruise vessels. Sanctions on Russian Entity and a Vessel Engaging in the Construction of Nord Stream 2

(file photo) Today, the United States is imposing sanctions on the Russia-based entity KVT-RUS and identifying the vessel FORTUNA as blocked property.  KVT-RUS is being sanctioned pursuant to Section 232 of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for knowingly selling, leasing, or providing to the Russian Federation goods, services, technology, information, or support for the construction of Russian energy export pipelines.  The United States will consider further actions in the near term, under CAATSA, and the Protecting European Energy Security Act (PEESA), as amended. Chinese dredging company sees real value in Wärtsilä service agreement

  The technology group Wärtsilä has signed a 5-year long-term service agreement with Nanjing Changjiang Waterway Engineering, a leading Chinese dredging company. The agreement, signed in December 2020, covers the ‘Chang Jing 9’, a 13,800 cubic metre trailing suction dredger and the latest addition to the company’s fleet. The ‘Chang Jing 9’ is a relatively new vessel having been delivered at the end of 2019. It is powered by two   Wärtsilä 46F   engines. The Optimised Maintenance agreement includes application of   Wärtsilä’s Expert Insight   predictive maintenance product, which facilitates optimal operation of the engines. First LNG-powered ferry to serve UK takes to the water

  The next ship to join Brittany Ferries’ fleet will be called Salamanca, she will be powered by cleaner LNG and she took to the water for the first time last week. Salamanca’s launch ceremony took place on 6 January 2021 at the CMJL shipyard in Weihai, China, where she is under construction. She is the second of three E-Flexer class ships ordered by Brittany Ferries and will join sister-ship Galicia, when she enters service in the spring of 2022. Fleet renewal is one of the pillars of Brittany Ferries’ five-year recovery plan. Due to hard weather conditions, the actual filling of the dry dock started already yesterday. “The float-out is always a very special occasion for us shipbuilders, as the ship is finally set to her natural environment. As this is also the start of the final stage of shipbuilding, all the exciting colors, venues and features will start taking their final form. In the coming months she will be finalized at the pier and then tested and commissioned in the autumn for delivery”, CEO of Meyer Turku, Tim Meyer, says. A consortium led by the University of Vaasa is about to receive significant funding from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme for a research project that promotes low-carbon shipping by combining several energy technologies and innovative ship design. The CHEK – deCarbonizing sHipping by Enabling Key technology symbiosis on real vessel concept designs – project involves, in addition to the University of Vaasa, World Maritime University, Wärtsilä, Cargill, MSC Cruises, Lloyds Register, Silverstream Technologies, Hasytec, Deltamarin, Climeon and BAR Technologies.   The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 2050. Nakilat takes delivery and management of LNG carrier newbuild

Nakilat has taken delivery of a newbuild LNG carrier, “ Global Star” , which will be commercially and technically managed in-house by Nakilat. Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), this is the second out of the four LNG carrier newbuilds to be delivered to Global Shipping Co. Ltd., a joint venture of Nakilat (60%) and Maran Ventures Inc. (Maran Ventures) (40%). The first newbuild “ Global Energy” was safely delivered in May 2020. The delivery of all four newbuild LNG carriers will bring Nakilat’s fleet to 74 vessels, which is just under 12% of the current global LNG fleet based on carrying capacity.   Stena Embla is the third new ship to be added to Irish Sea routes Stena Line’s newest addition to its fleet, the brand-new   Stena Embla   has arrived in Belfast.   Stena Embla   is the third E-Flexer ferry to be commissioned for Stena Line’s Irish Sea routes in the last 12 months, three of the most modern ferries in the world.    Stena Embla   will join her sister ship on the popular Belfast – Liverpool route later this month.   Stena Embla   has the capacity to carry 1 000 passengers, 120 cars and 3,100 lane metres of freight.  This will provide a significant 20% increase in freight capacity for the route, which is expected to see an increase in demand post-Brexit.
